Aveso Receives Product
Development Award from the Center for Commercialization of Advanced
Technology
Dow spin-out developing flexible electronic displays for military
use
Minneapolis, April 12, 2005 – Aveso, Inc., a pioneer
in the development of ultra thin, ultra low-power printed electronic
displays, announced today that it has been awarded a Product Development
Award by the Center for Commercialization of Advanced Technology (CCAT)
to support the development of the next generation of Aveso displays
for future use in military applications. The award was granted as
part of CCAT’s latest solicitation to help introduce innovative
homeland security technologies to both the military and commercial
marketplaces.
A recent spin-out from The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), Aveso
develops printed electronic display devices for the high-growth, high-volume
smart card and smart label markets, where brand owners seek a cost-effective
means to deliver critical security and safety information to consumers.
The devices feature the company’s proprietary printed electronic
display technology integrated with electronic components including
microprocessors, power, radio frequency (RF) antenna and user interface.
Funding from the CCAT will support Aveso’s efforts to develop
next-generation, higher-resolution displays that meet both military
and commercial applications.
The target military application for higher-resolution, matrix-addressable
Aveso display technology is a wirelessly updateable display device
that can be worn as a wristband or embedded into textiles. The device
will feature an Aveso display with sufficient resolution required
to provide soldiers with situational awareness communications, updated
commands, maps or pictures. “Aveso’s CCAT award
speaks to the importance of near-term flexible display products for
the military,” said Tom Byrne, program manager of CCAT. “Aveso’s
technology represents a practical display solution that can be commercialized
rapidly. Our support will help accelerate efforts to develop this
breakthrough technology and get it into the hands of our military
personnel as quickly as possible.”
Stephen F. Quindlen, president and chief executive officer of Aveso,
said, “We look forward to working with CCAT as we develop our
next-generation product platform and identify early adopters of our
technology across the U.S. military.” About
the Center for Commercialization of Advanced Technology
CCAT — supported by Congress and funded by the Department of
Defense — is a public-private collaborative partnership between
academia, industry, and government. Partners include San Diego State
University (SDSU) Foundation and Entrepreneurial Management Center,
the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Jacobs School of Engineering
and UCSD CONNECT, and Lockheed Martin ORINCON Technologies, Inc. with
support from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego.
The consortium-style CCAT intends to bridge the gap that exists between
the generators of technology, the Department of Defense and the commercial
marketplace. For more information about CCAT, visit www.ccatsandiego.org.
